Sierra Wireless Watcher 1.1.1 hangs in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard,
Despite Sierra Wireless' knowledge-base statement that AirCard 597E can be used with Leopard:
Yes. Aircard 597E support TRU-Install with Mac OS 10.5 Leopard. When the Aircard 597E is inserted, it will show the following window. Please double-click on SierraWirelessWactherlite.mpkg to begin the installation.
My AirCard does not provide it's own software, even after clearing all the previously-installed Sierra software (kernal extensions & app) from the system.
On the other hand, if you experienced any problem please download the software from the support section of the Sierra Wireless website.
That software provided for Sprint EV-DO service is still the same buggy version 1.1.1.
A thread at the Apple forums mentions that removing several of the built-in Apple WWAN components allows Wireless Watcher to run crash-free:
I ended up deleting a few files from the Leopard system:
/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/WWAN.menu
/System/Library/Extensions/IOSerialFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/AppleWWANSupport*
/System/Library/Extensions/IOSerialFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/AppleVerizon*
But this has no effect in my situation. Wireless Watcher still hangs.
If the AirCard is already activated, then it's possible to connect using Apple's built-in PPP dialer in Systems Preferences: Network, avoiding the need for the buggy Sierra Wireless Watcher application.
